Fairy Tales

This synchromagick journey will take you through Bowie’s oeuvre, and how how his passing is not as tragic as missing the opportunity for the proper invocation of Bowie’s influence and effect on the human psyche, for your own artistic growth.

After all, as author and blogger Christopher Knowles noted in his recent entries on the Secret Sun, it’s almost like something else wants me to write this, or Bowie is working through those open to artistic mediumship.

Knowles also covers a prophetic Bowie album cover, from years ago, on his other blog, the Solar Satellite. This topic is nothing new to the author of the Secret History of Rock n’ Roll, and such heavy hitting Secret Sun entries, as “The Muses Prefer Broken Vessels”, which reveals an intimate and intuitive, understanding of the dark underside of being a music “star”.

(I read that Secret Sun piece after I had already felt there was something otherworldly but comfortably and genuinely Bowieish urging me to write this blog. As well as the visual Facestalk parables, which preceded this attempt at organizing any of this, while attempting to remain in peak awareness of all my Synchro-homeys, and assorted other music friend’s arcane, unusual, and hidden Bowie finds, in the same vein.)

There are some really great articles and blogs honoring Bowie’s legendary body of work. Some of them, are racing to explain Bowie’s last messages; a solitary and sobering broadcast, in the form of the Black Star and Lazarus.

I thought I should try something a little different than some of my heroes, peers, and contemporaries, yet still pseudo cutting and pasting, what I admire about their reverence and insight. To this end, I would like to first thank  Jake Kotze, Will Morgan, Christopher Knowles, and others, for some of the inspiration to start putting this together.

Let’s Dance was Bowie’s best selling album released on April 14,1983

“Let’s Dance. Put on your red shoes and dance the blues, top the sound they’re playing on the radio…For fear your grace should fall
Let’s dance, For fear tonight is all
Under the moonlight, this serious moonlight”

In the following Tori Amos song she suggest many ideas related to Bowie’s Black Star lyrics:

“Jets are revving yes revving from a central source

And this has power over me, not because
You feel something or don’t feel something for me
But because, mass so big
It can swallow, swallow her whole star intact

Call me evil call me tide is on your side
Anything that you want
Anybody knows you can conjure anything
By the dark of the moon

Boy, and if you keep your silent silencer on
You’ll talk yourself right into a job
Out of a hole but into my bayou into my, my body” -Tori Amos, Suede

China Girl: (May 1977)

I could escape this feeling with my China girl
I feel a wreck without my little China girl
I hear her heart beating, loud as thunder
Saw their stars crashing
I stumble into town just like a sacred cow
Visions of swastikas in my head
Plans for everyone
It’s in the white of my eyes

The Powerball:

Blackstar (stylised as ★) is the twenty-sixth and final studio album by English musician David Bowie. It was released through Bowie’s ISO Records label on 8 January 2016, the date of Bowie’s 69th birthday; Bowie would unexpectedly pass away two days later (10 January 2016).-Blair Walsh: Anti-Hero on the Day Bowie Dies?

Black Star music video

Bowie contorts in shamanic trance, his face covered in bandages with, what appears to be, silver bolts for eyes, prodding out in a rather creepy fashion, like some steampunk-Tusken Raider, version of himself,  (designed like Adam Jones, if he had worked for Henson, and not Winston.) with background dancers contorting in a similar, but more voodoo-like, fashion. The attic room they are in, sort of resembles the shape of the Crow’s apartment, in a Labyrinth, and complete with a young girl in white, with a demon-like tail. She walks past a long forgotten astronaut, in the immediate background is a kind of pueblo version of the Labyrinth, and some structure resembling a building from the Neverending Story can be seen in the far background.

Blackstar’s title screen, so to speak, with the Black Star, actually resembles a Black Sun, more than a star. Bowie has mentioned in interviews an interest in Nazi occultism, among many other forms of esotericism, it wouldn’t be an impossible stretch, to say that Bowie hides this behind the idea of the Black Star (which would be him, in my opinion). The sort of, title screen for the video kind of looks like a scene from the Neverending Story in general; particularly the Oracle Scene.

The Labyrinth

The girl with the tail in white, brings to mind, Jennifer Connelly in the Labyrinth. She is curious about the mysteries of the maze around her in a similar manner, as well. This theme is also in a film, which uses Jennifer Connelly’s most redundant and obvious archetype, (by far) as it’s actual film title, without even including her:  Mirror, Mirror.

The film is centered around a girl who travels through a mirror, and gets lost in a confusing world of wonders and little people, who in the least, overwhelm her archetypal innocence and floundering white dress. So, Mirror, basically borrows from Labyrinth, which is an updated, but affectionately parallel tale to Alice In Wonderland, and even the Wizard of Oz, all of which update a kind of fairy tale that will come up again, because of Bowie’s interlinking mythos.

In the villa of Ormen, in the villa of Ormen
Stands a solitary candle, ah-ah, ah-ah
In the centre of it all, in the centre of it all
Your eyes

On the day of execution, on the day of execution
Only women kneel and smile, ah-ah, ah-ah
At the centre of it all, at the centre of it all
Your eyes, your eyes

In the villa of Ormen, in the villa of Ormen
Stands a solitary candle, ah-ah, ah-ah
In the centre of it all, in the centre of it all
Your eyes

Something happened on the day he died
Spirit rose a metre and stepped aside
Somebody else took his place, and bravely cried
(I’m a blackstar, I’m a blackstar)

How many times does an angel fall?
How many people lie instead of talking tall?
He trod on sacred ground, he cried loud into the crowd
(I’m a blackstar, I’m a blackstar, I’m not a gangstar)

I can’t answer why (I’m a blackstar)
Just go with me (I’m not a filmstar)
I’m-a take you home (I’m a blackstar)
Take your passport and shoes (I’m not a popstar)
And your sedatives, boo (I’m a blackstar)
You’re a flash in the pan (I’m not a marvel star)
I’m the great I am (I’m a blackstar)

I’m a blackstar, way up, on money, I’ve got game
I see right, so wide, so open-hearted pain
I want eagles in my daydreams, diamonds in my eyes
(I’m a blackstar, I’m a blackstar)

I can’t answer why (I’m not a gangstar)
But I can tell you how (I’m not a flam star)
We were born upside-down (I’m a star’s star)
Born the wrong way ’round (I’m not a white star)

(I’m a blackstar, I’m not a gangstar
I’m a blackstar, I’m a blackstar
I’m not a pornstar, I’m not a wandering star
I’m a blackstar, I’m a blackstar)

In the villa of Ormen stands a solitary candle
Ah-ah, ah-ah
At the centre of it all, your eyes
On the day of execution, only women kneel and smile
Ah-ah, ah-ah
At the centre of it all, your eyes, your eyes

(What is the Villa of Ormen?)

The Villa of Ormen, as far as the internet informs us, so far, is an obscure Tumblr; complete with images, rife with heavy relation to Bowie’s last two masterpiece videos.

Continuing with fairy tales, the Tumblr’s main title graphic is that of the interlinking snakes, but not just any interwoven orourobus interpretation, it’s the literal symbol from the Neverending Story.

Another girl accumulates the gem encrusted skull, and holds it up in a ritual, where she is surrounded by girls, also in white time period outfits, who go into an increasingly convulsive state. Someone’s body trembling is associated in popular organized religion, as being possessed by the holy spirit, or things not so holy…of course.

The blurs of the color red in this scene, with the skull and the dark priestess or High Priestess, guiding this ritual seems meant to be alluring and disturbing, perhaps this is what could be meant by the veil on the High Priestess tarot, or the fear that can accompany it, not only in death, in the literal sense, but the unknown as a more universal force, we tend to personify as evil.

If it does represent some evil, it’s in my opinion, a sort of Saturnian death cult. The dark spiritualism, meant to control the star, the corruption of power in an occult way, and therefore hidden. I think this links further to why there ritual seems to coincide with the birth of some dark monstrous entity, in the alternate setting, in the open field. This field only includes two major shots that are returned to. The first, not really directly linked to the ritual, is that of the three scarecrows. This is the fear of the open source, or matrix, perhaps symbolized by the field, guarded, like some magickal gate by a type of gargoyle, to keep the meek and unprepared, uninitiated. When the ritual comes to a head, it seems to birth the other scene in the field; a monster made of not so clear garbage or moss, or perhaps both.

The Black Star may be resonant of a few ideas that resonate with Bowie. It tells us Bowie is not a normal star (one-dimensional celebrity), but rather a special, divine, or alien  Man That Fell to Earth. The Watchmen/Man Who Fell To Earth idea is from fellow Sync-head Darren (Brizdaz) (click here for his post on The Black Star & 2001: A Space Odyssey)

The question is, does he view himself as a black sheep or a bringer of new light? An odd man out who doesn’t ever mind being exactly who he is, or a Lucifer like foreigner, alienated by modern life? If both, then I don’t think William S. Burroughs was far off…

Speaking of Burroughs: As we’ve mentioned, you accomplish Feats in The Maze of the Space Minotaur in order to summon The Black Glove and change the past of the theatre’s resident creators. It’s a game-centric take on William S. Burroughs’ cut-up technique, something he suggested was a way for art to communicate with the past.

Some have suggested the astronaut is symbolic of some kind of cryptic warning from Bowie. Perhaps he is Major Tom, the astronaut also wears a smiley face patch as a possible term associated with Bowie’s, collage-like, sort of chaos-magick-like, form of occultism, that of the “smiling gnostic.” Bowie mentions having gems over his eyes in the lyrics and the skull unveiled under the astronaut’s helmet is encrusted with majestic multicolored gems, and crystals.

The cryptic, but not so bejeweled astronaut from Apollo 23, (skidoo) The Doctor Who episode, gives off a similar creepy long forgotten space man vibe.

Bowie emerges from, and then returns at the end , to a wardrobe, leading some bloggers to think of it as a doorway to another dimension, in the tradition of The Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe.

Bowie is telling us, he’s The Man Who Fell To Earth from somewhere else and now he is returning by leaving this physical world.

When Bowie enters from, only later to conceal himself ( in a kind of veil of all time and space, or simply death, the world after this one ) in a wardrobe, we can take this as a reference to entering Narnia through the Wardrobe in C.S.Lewis’ Chronicles. Perhaps his wardrobe is not a closet or a coffin, maybe that’s for the emotional fans without eyes to see. As I believe Bowie would have wanted, a perception of symbol and depth, not just simple video tricks and mere death.

Look up here, man, I’m in danger
I’ve got nothing left to lose
I’m so high, it makes my brain whirl
Dropped my cell phone down below
Ain’t that just like me?

By the time I got to New York
I was living like a king
Then I used up all my money
I was looking for your ass

This way or no way
You know I’ll be free
Just like that bluebird
Now, ain’t that just like me?

Oh, I’ll be free
Just like that bluebird
Oh, I’ll be free
Ain’t that just like me?

Music and Magick

I think Bowie was quite ahead of his time in so many ways. This, as a fan, yourself, or even if you know someone who happens to be a fan, is probably already quite well established altogether even to those who don’t fancy his music. However, one of the aspects about Bowie that can be seen as, the most rare among celebrities that traversed the same decades of such widespread influence, is an interest in the occult that comes off as light hearted, pragmatic, and still concealed within his symbol, not so much in his admittance to anything dark and spooky.

Additional Notes:

DB-8, our new little droid friend from Star Wars: The Force Awakens is noted as an abbreviation for David Bowie-8 (pointed star) by Jake Kotze (I imagine that 8 pointed star as resonant with the Death Star, literally and in Star Wars).

Life On Mars: The original BBC series took its name from the David Bowie song,Life on Mars”.

Ashes To Ashes: The series is full of David Bowie references:- “Ashes to Ashes” is one of his songs, and features a Pierrot clown in its video, and one episode also features a “Laughing Gnome” (which is the name of another Bowie song).

Cancer is associated with the Tower tarot card. We are all here to find a common language to convey more and more, and newer types of information without attaching any moral or PC definitions to the follow interpretation…

We may view the lightning (light bringing) a type of catalyst to destroy, so as to begin again, either pure spirit like the phoenix from the ashes,
or reanimated as Lazarus walks from his cave, where he was thought to have been dead.

The Light Bringer often comes with neato powers of resurrection, as does the Adversary. Bowie is a fair and wise light bringer (Lucifer, the Star in the Dark of the Morning) and Apocalypse is Set.

Leave it to Star Wars to have Sabers of Light in a battle for Death Stars and Star Killers or in the real Empire’s concern-as was Bowie’s from what we can see, The Holy Grail.

… my other fascination with the Nazis was their search for the Holy Grail…. It was this Arthurian need, this search for a mythological link with God…. I was just looking for some answers. Some secret. Some life force. I had this religious fervour. The search for the Holy Grail. David Bowie, Arena, 1993

I drew gateways into different dimensions, and I’m quite sure that, for myself, I really walked into other worlds. I drew things on walls and just walked through them, and saw what was on the other side! -Bowie, New Musical Express, 1997
